What is an LLM?

The engine behind text generative AI, trained on massive text corpora.

LLM · large language model

An LLM (Large Language Model) is a model trained on huge volumes of text to understand and generate language. It is the engine behind ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude.

Why it matters

Understanding what an LLM is helps you know what it can do (reason over text) and its limits: it predicts plausible text, it does not truly know. That is the basis for picking the right model and avoiding misuse.
